Figures before prose
One page of MSIG Insurance’s 2022 annual report puts its numbers ahead of its paragraphs. Under the Chairman’s Statement tab, a highlighted passage compares underwriting profit and the combined operating ratio with 2021, and a panel of headline figures sits beside it.
That order suits a report with more than one kind of reader. MSIG Insurance (Malaysia) Berhad is a general insurer in Malaysia writing motor, fire, marine and specialty lines. Its 2022 report was written for regulators, shareholders and business partners. Some of those readers handle insurance ratios for a living, while others want the year’s result in a sentence before they read further.
Walk Production’s scope on this annual report covered concept development, visual and layout design, infographics, report copywriting and proofreading. MSIG’s reporting team reviewed the disclosure-heavy sections, including the regulatory and compliance content.
A chairman’s statement page built around key figures
The page works in three bands. At the top, a navy icon anchors a short passage in bold navy type, with a thin green line curving beneath it. To the right, a two-by-two grid holds four labeled figures: market position, profit after tax, earnings per share and gross written premium.
The body text follows in a single column. A pale tinted band then closes the page with three further totals: total assets, total investments, and total investment and other income.
Every figure in the grid and the band gets the same treatment. The numeral is large and green, its unit is set small beside it, and a navy uppercase label sits above. A reader who scans only the top and foot of the page still leaves with the year’s headline numbers. The prose in between can then explain those numbers instead of listing them.
The infographic design beyond this page covered the measures an insurer reports each year, including premium income breakdowns, claims ratios, investment portfolio mix and loss ratio trends. One set of visual conventions ran across every data graphic, which makes year-on-year comparison quicker for specialist and general readers alike.
Product updates explained in a sentence
The facing page of the same spread moves into the operational review, under the heading Products and Services Enhancement. Each product entry pairs a short description with a green callout that states, in one sentence, what the cover pays for. One callout, for example, says the cover meets the additional cost of replacing damaged materials with sustainable alternatives.
Navy icons mark the entries at the outer margin. A thin green line runs under each entry, bends up into its icon, and carries on to the next product. An overhead photograph of a spiral staircase wound around a green planted core breaks up the text halfway down.
A reader who skims the page can take each product’s purpose from the green callouts alone, and the paragraph beside each callout holds the detail.
The cover and its disc
The cover carries the report’s theme line, “Growing with values and synergy”, over a photograph of a seedling rising from dark soil. A thick navy line rises from the soil and arches over the plant. A white band at the foot holds the words Annual Report 2022 in capitals.
Inside the report, a thinner green line plays a similar linking role, joining icons and framing key passages across the pages described above.
The gallery image pairs the cover with a disc face built from the same artwork. The top of the disc carries the MSIG logo and tagline, a line naming the company as a member of MS&AD Insurance Group, and the full company name. Below that, the seedling and the navy line continue. A column of four white line icons runs down the curve: a globe with leaves, buildings circled by arrows, a gear that turns into circuit lines, and a pair of hands holding a shield.
Writing for readers outside insurance
Walk Production’s report copywriting team drafted the narrative for the management discussion, operational review and corporate governance sections. The aim was insurance terminology that stays exact, in passages a shareholder or partner outside the industry can still follow. Disclosure expectations for the Malaysian market shaped the language throughout.
Proofreading ran over several review cycles. It covered financial figures, actuarial references and compliance language, so that numbers, terms and narrative matched across sections before the report went to production.

Related Questions
Which MSIG company was the client for this report?
The client was MSIG Insurance (Malaysia) Berhad, a general insurer in Malaysia writing motor, fire, marine and specialty lines. The report covers that company’s 2022 reporting period. The disc artwork in the gallery identifies the company as a member of MS&AD Insurance Group.
How can an insurer’s ratios be made readable for shareholders outside the industry?
Pair each ratio with the prior year in a plain sentence, then give the headline figures a fixed place on the page. In MSIG Insurance’s 2022 report, a highlighted passage compares underwriting profit and the combined operating ratio with 2021. A panel beside it holds four labeled figures in one color and type style, so readers see the direction of the year before the detail.
What did Walk Production write for the 2022 report?
Walk Production wrote the narrative for the management discussion, operational review and corporate governance sections, and proofread the whole publication. The writing kept insurance terms precise while staying readable for a broad stakeholder audience. MSIG’s reporting team reviewed the regulatory and compliance sections, and proofreading covered financial figures, actuarial references and compliance language over several cycles.
How does this project differ from MSIG Insurance’s 2024 annual report?
The two projects cover different reporting years and different scopes. The 2022 scope recorded here is annual report design, infographic design and report copywriting. The 2024 case study records art direction, annual report design, graphic design and proofreading, and describes that edition separately.
Does Walk Production advise on insurance disclosures or compliance?
No. Walk Production designs and writes reports, and it does not provide audit, assurance, actuarial or legal advice. On this project, MSIG’s reporting team reviewed the disclosure-heavy and compliance content. Walk Production’s part was structure, writing, proofreading and design, so that the approved content reads clearly.
