One listed group, several businesses

Sarawak Oil Palms Berhad is listed on Bursa Malaysia as a single company. The business behind it runs from plantation work upstream through downstream activity, with property development alongside. Its 2024 annual report had to hold all of that in one publication that reads in order from the front, yet lets a shareholder turn straight to the part of the group they follow.

Walk Production took the report from design through to print-ready files.

Who handled what

The scope sat inside one corporate reporting timeline. Our annual report design team handled six pieces of it:

  • Design: the cover and the page layout.
  • Infographics: charts and visual formats built from client-supplied data.
  • Proofreading: narrative copy, data presentations and governance statements.
  • Print file handoff: print-ready files for the client’s appointed printing vendor.
  • Envelope files: artwork and address-data templates for the same vendor.
  • Media advertisement: placement supporting the annual general meeting announcement.

Two parts of the job sat outside our hands. The client’s reporting advisers reviewed the financial and disclosure-sensitive sections, and printing stayed with the vendor.

A cover that draws the value chain

The report carries the theme Sustainability in Motion: Creating Value Across the Chain. The cover turns that line into a single illustrated scene in a vivid palette.

A watercolor band crosses the middle of the cover, warming from orange at the spine to teal and green at the outer edge. On the left stands a processing plant with its storage tanks. A worker drives a tractor through the center, and on the right two harvesters work an oil palm hung with fruit bunches. Ribbons of pink, blue, green and deep teal sweep beneath all three and run off the page, so plantation and production sit on one continuous line.

The theme line is set in two weights. “Sustainability in Motion” sits in a light face, and “Creating Value Across the Chain” follows in a heavier italic that takes the emphasis. Below the illustration the cover goes quiet: plain stock, a stacked ANNUAL REPORT beside a large, light 2024, a thin vertical rule between them, and the company name underneath. The group’s seal sits alone at the top right.

A layout that lets readers choose a segment

Inside, the layout gives the group’s core activities their own places, so upstream and downstream performance can each be found without reading everything around them. A shareholder can take the book front to back, or open it at the operation they care about.

Sustainability has its own section, titled Sustainability Report 2024, which follows the chairman’s statement and the management discussion and analysis. The reader meets the operating story before the sustainability disclosures, and the financial statements sit in the same book.

Charts built from the client’s own figures

The numbers came from SOP. Our infographic design work turned the client’s production data, financial figures and sustainability indicators into visual formats a reader can take in quickly.

Every chart follows the same corporate styling as the rest of the report. A production chart and a financial chart share one visual language, which matters in a book that moves between field operations and group accounts.

Proofreading, and the checks that stayed with the client

Our proofreading covered the narrative copy, with attention to readability, agricultural terminology and a steady tone. The editorial pass also took in the data presentations and governance statements.

Financial and disclosure-sensitive sections went to the client’s reporting advisers for review. On our side, cross-referencing kept section titles, the contents page and page references in step across the whole book.

From final artwork to the vendor

Walk Production supplied the print-ready files to the client’s appointed vendor, and supported the vendor on color proofing, paper selection and binding specifications.

The report’s length meant file preparation had to be planned across both the non-financial sections and the financial statements. Each stage was documented to support color accuracy, print quality and binding integrity. Files for shareholder, analyst and institutional copies reached the vendor within the corporate reporting timeline.

For the envelopes, we prepared the artwork, address-data templates and handoff notes the vendor needed, and documented the database and envelope specifications. Those files were aligned with the client’s announced AGM date. Media advertisement placement ran alongside, supporting the annual general meeting announcement.

How the same brief reads for an SGX-listed group

SOP is listed on Bursa Malaysia, so the Singapore rules below are offered as a comparison. A Singapore group with more than one line of business meets the same layout question, though, and the SGX Rulebook frames it in comparable terms:

  • Mainboard Rule 1207 requires the annual report to include a review of the operating and financial performance of the issuer and its principal subsidiaries, in as much detail as appropriate.
  • Practice Note 7.4, the operating and financial review guide that issuers are encouraged but not required to follow, points that review at the company as a whole and at the business or geographic segments relevant to understanding its performance.
  • Rule 711A has the sustainability report issued at the same time as the annual report, or within five months of the financial year-end where the issuer has had it externally assured.

For a design team, those rules raise the two questions SOP’s report had to answer: where each segment’s results sit, and where sustainability sits relative to the annual report. Our guide to annual report content in Singapore covers the wider disclosure list. The rules change, so confirm the current text on the SGX Rulebook with your company secretary and advisers.

What the finished report gives its readers

The 2024 report presents SOP’s operations across the palm oil value chain and property development in one structured publication. It works as an investor relations document for the group, and each operation has a place a reader can find.

The cover and the layout tell the same story from two directions. The illustration shows value moving from plantation to production, and the page structure lets each stage of that chain be read on its own. For the client’s reporting team, one studio handled design, charts, proofreading and file preparation, which gave them a single coordination point up to the vendor handoff.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does sustainability sit in the SOP 2024 annual report?

It has its own section inside the annual report, titled Sustainability Report 2024. The section follows the chairman’s statement and the management discussion and analysis, so shareholders read the operating story, the sustainability disclosures and the financial statements in one publication.

What did Walk Production hand to the printing vendor?

We supplied print-ready files for the shareholder, analyst and institutional copies, and supported the vendor on color proofing, paper selection and binding specifications. We also prepared envelope artwork, address-data templates and handoff notes, with the database and envelope specifications documented against the client’s announced AGM date.

Who checked the financial figures in the report?

The client’s reporting advisers reviewed the financial and disclosure-sensitive sections. Our proofreading covered narrative copy, data presentations and governance statements for readability, terminology and tone. We also cross-checked section titles, the contents page and page references across the book.

How does this project relate to SGX reporting?

SOP is listed on Bursa Malaysia, so the SGX rules serve here as a comparison for Singapore readers. A Singapore group with several businesses meets the same design questions. SGX Mainboard Rule 1207 requires a review of the performance of the issuer and its principal subsidiaries, and Rule 711A ties the sustainability report’s timing to the annual report. Confirm the current rule text on the SGX Rulebook before planning around it.

Does Walk Production advise on listing rules or sustainability disclosure?

No. For report work, Walk Production is a design and copywriting studio, and it is not an audit, assurance or legal firm. Sustainability consulting is available, with the consultant on the project appointed by the client or drawn from our partner panel. Independent assurance and legal advice stay with the client’s appointed providers.
